Part of the ice series, Gerhard Richter’s layered oil painting is about memory and the effect of the Holocaust on manipulating memory. It compliments his photo-realistic paintings which additionally question the importance of painting post-photography. While photography can capture a scene, painting is necessary to transcend all scenes and capture ideas, making them physical. I prefer Richter’s abstractions to his realistic work.

 

I am an avid letter writer and list maker. When I have the time, I write things down with liquid walnut ink that I dip a cheap nibbed pen or a thin brush into. While a blog isn’t the most personal or intimate way of recording ideas, I like painting and illustration so can easily share both here. While I’m certainly not a photographer, I will post visual records of my days. There will be less of my own work than work that I admire but I’ll post paintings or drawings when they relate to what I’m experiencing.  When I feel so inclined, I’ll discuss my own or others’ opinions on art. This is not my only blog but it will hopefully be the one that I like the most.
